Spotted a table that I like; which is apparently from Debenhams.

I'm aware that the crap they peddle now is utter rubbish, but I'm not sure about older stuff. I like the style and all I'm really concerned with is the quality.

I'm happy to buy it if it's solid wood, not if it's veneered cardboard. Yes, I've asked the seller and the answer is indeterminate.

From the general construction (rads on the legs) and depth of the grain visible on the top sections in some of the pics I'd chance my arm that it's sold, but then I don't know what I'm talking about.

Any thoughts gratefully received - ta!

At a guess the legs may be solid, but the top is unlikely to be.

If you look at the top it looks like it's veneered, look at how the grain almost matches. Guessing it will be ply or blockboard with veneer on. PS I'm no expert

Thanks both - I noticed the repeating grain pattern on the top; while it's clearly not one big slab I assume you could also get a similar effect from using multiple sections cut from the same trunk..

That said the lips around the edges would be a convenient way of hiding not-end-grain..

That said the lips around the edges would be a convenient way of hiding not-end-grain..

can you get the seller to send you a higher resolution image showing the edges of the folding sections, also the hinges, then you can see what the exposed ends are like and get a better idea of the quality

Top is almost certainly veneered, depends what the core is. If blockboard/plywood then all is good MDF can be fine but it depends on the quality same with chipboard, you can get good stuff or cheap rubbish,. I'd be asking what age, the older the better as that would more likely be quality core material........................Oh BTW I'm a City&Guilds qualified Cabinet Maker.

Thanks - tbh while I'd much prefer "proper" wood I'm not totally averse to a decent quality ply. I won't lower myself to MDF if I can help it though; and certainly not chipboard!

It's described as "mid century style" which, along with the condition suggests to me it's more recent - so increasing the potential for it to be made from cardboard.

Were it just down the road I'd probably just give it a squiz, but given the reasonable distance involved I think I'll keep looking.

I say solid. 'cause the centre bit looks like jointed boards, whereas verneer is typically wider.
However, the truth can only be told if you can post a clear, close-up photo of this section. I need to see the board side-on in good detail.

Yeah, sadly I like everything about it other than the potential for it to be made of old cornflakes packets. And maybe the price..

I'll sit on it and see if I find myself in an unfeasibly good mood / feel like a gamble later in the week.

It looks to be 80's to me, very usable table & probable better made than some of the current offerings. The legs will be solid wood for sure, the top almost certainly will be veneered board with a 10-15mm solid wood lipping around the perimeter.
In this picture, you can see the lipping on the edges of the table centre section.
