I have used a bin linner with a newspapper top before now, seems to work well for me. The bin liner catches dirt whilst paper catches liquids but i would suggest if there is a lot of dirt or sumthing then maybe a tub the same length/similar length as the bike to catch it

Rear communal garden for a thorough wash, Flash cleaning wipes for a speedy clean up.

How do you guys clean your bike properly without messing up your kitchen/bathroom wherever?

Luckily I have a flat with easy access to the outside carpark so do it there, but at the old flat I've taken the bike down several flights of stairs with the bucket of water rather than try and wash it inside.

I like the bath tip though, migh have to try it:thumbsup:

I used to live in a flat and whilst cleaning the bike in the bath was ok I didn't like it if I shifted and accidentally sat on a jockey wheel. You have to be careeful as well not to loose any small bits down the plughole when you get out and let the water out.

I now in a house, but will be moving back to my Edinburgh flat in a few months. For me, I had no outside area whatsoever. I used a large old duvet cover which I laid in the kitchen, used not too much water from a basin and it worked just fine. The duvet cover was then given a shake out of the window. However, one flat I rented in Glasgow had a very large shower and I often took the bike into the shower for a quick spray down.

What is this 'cleaning' of which you speak?
Cleaning ones bike is very important. It is the front line of all bicycle maintenance, not just a chore for it's own sake. It is whilst cleaning that one may spot trouble areas that need attention and detailed cleaning will highlight these all the sooner.

I know - I was teasing Ianrauk, who has a reputation for extreme cleanliness of his bikes.
When I lived in a flat, I either gave the bike a gentle jetwashing, or stood it in the bath and used the shower spray.

Another advocate for the baby wipes here, but since I have very light carpets I normally give the bikes a clean with a soft brush (dustpan and brush type brush) outside once the bike's dry to get rid of the worst of the crap. Re-lube and leave in the kitchen with some newspaper to catch any drips. My bikes are always super clean as I do this once a week for my daily ride at the time and then as often as necessary on those which I'm using less often.
