one thing that always puzzled me about the Anno Domini thing is... when did the year of 'our lord' start? At birth or after death, when he supposedly rose to become 'our lord'. Is 10 BC ten years before his birth or ten years before death and subsequent rising?

It's all an invention. Those who promote JC as a better imaginary-best-friend than Mohammed and Buddha and all the others needed to give structure and an air of legitimacy to all the nonsense so at some time a few centuries ago a committee of bloated theocrats sat down somewhere and after a few days agreed a story that fitted the general narrative, which the gullible masses swallowed. Publishing it in a big book gave it as much credibility as the stuff we read on the internet so it grew and spawned a system of political control, which also generates fabulous wealth. Look at any district of an African city like Lagos on Google Maps and you'll be astonished at the numbers of copies that have grown up calling themselves the only true church.

A bloke i used to work with had a very interesting* theory. The powers that be (probably the illuminati or some such) tested our gullibility by convincing us to celebrate the millennium a year early... If we did, which we did, it paved the way for them (probably the illuminati or some such) to destroy the twin towers and crash a plane into the Pentagon and blame it on terrorists
