Sensible and polite recommendations please. My wife has started to commute to work by bike, she is using a very tired old Raleigh faux mountain-bike. I think the cycling bug has bitten her slightly and she has indicated that she would like a new bike. It's primarily to commute comfortably on (we live one side of a valley and work is on the other, but it's only 4 miles each way), so it would need flat bars and mudguards. I think she could also be tempted out into the lanes of Warwickshire and maybe, just maybe some weekend credit card touring, so a rear rack would be useful too. Given the multiplicity of roles this bike might have to undertake what would you buy? Budget-wise let's say around £500-00!

Looked at the boardman hybrid for the wife, then the sirrus elite, both good bikes, but \I am thinking stretching the extra for the Planet x carbon hybrid, was wondering if anyone out there has the Planet x carbon hybrid at 8kg,got to make it as easy as possible for a woman so she enjoys and comes back for more.
