When I was 16 stone at 5ft 9.5 was well into the obesity range. The mental picture I had of myself looked nothing like the fat guy in photographs of myself.

I think the family and friends of obese people are part of the problem sometimes you need to be cruel to be kind.

When I was 13 1/2 stone at 5-11 my doctor told me I was "a fat bastard". I bought a bike and was 2 stone lighter in 9 months. And much much happier.

It's the food industry
It's their genes
It's their metabolism
It's their big bones
There's no help
It's not their fault and we can't mention they're fat

It's a bit more complicated than that...

The fat "guy" in the photograph is probably a woman. If you were 16 stone at nearly six foot you did look nothing like her - and not just because you're a cyclingbloke. It's perfectly possible to be 16 stone and fit and healthy.

People are fat because they ingest more calories than they expend. Reversing that is not a difficult problem - but it is an incredibly hard one.

If its true that each square cm of muscle is three times heavier than each square cm of fat, some of
us on the forum will have legs weighing 30kgs each!!

The other one is - "it's a glandular problem". The gland in question being the one with a hole in the front of the head, and the problem being too much shoved into it.
Simple equation, energy expenditure out - greater than fuel in = defecit and lower weight. However, as has been said, muscle is much heavier than fat, so when Cav, for instance, says he drops to 10.5 stones during the TdF, and is not so tall, then you have to deduce that fast twitch muscle is bulky as you don't see much fat about him. Which is why the specialist climbers all look like refugees from a starvation camp, different body type.

That said, look at some of the modern rugby players, yesterday I watch a 18 stone winger move so fast on his feet, and keep doing it for the full 80 minutes. He would be about 6ft tall, and according to the charts all the medics like to use, was obese. Bet his doctor wouldn't dare tell him that!

I have amended my first post as it was a bit ambiguous, I meant looking at pics of myself not the pic in the link .

Point I was trying to make is that its human nature to become very skilfull at deceiving yourself that all is ok even when the evidence is obvious when you look in the mirror (or at photos of yourself :-) ).

I'm almost 'Obese' on the BMI scale and it's purely down to overconsumption .
The second point is incredibly true (having been a skinny boy for most of my life), loosing kgs is harder than anticipated.

I am walking, running (10km this morning), cycling (at least one 100km ride a month) proof of that.

Fat fit. It is the new black.

On the BMI I am obese. I'm 15 stone (actually put a stone on over 2 weeks off at christmas  ) The BMI takes no account of physique other than strength and my Dr confirmed that. However I think we all know, deep down, when we've let it go too far.

I've worked out that I've consumed around 1000 more calories than I usually do every day over the last 2 weeks. Gotta love tins of sweets and festive food....
