A 3t larger bottom sprocket can make a reasonable difference - it's basically like having one gear lower than you currently have. I struggle with a 42/28 bottom gear on my ten speed and am much happier on steep hills when I've got the ridiculous 28/30 granny gear on my tourer!
A triple is the way to go if you can afford it and be bothered.
