I don't really understand this obsession with a 52/53t big ring. The only time I use such a thing is when I'm racing. On my touring/audax machine 46t is quite enough to stay in the bunch.

I had the older Veloce shifters and did have the LH working on a triple ok - but they took a while to get the setup right - so you should not have too much of a problem with your Chorus shifters. You can get older Campag triple front mechs - I got one - Comp Triple - myself a year ago. The new models are very expensive for some reason. I have use a Shimano mech with the Veloce shifter and it works, but feels harder to move the mech.

I have a 52 on my other bike and used to have a 12-23 cassette on it. I decided that I did need a 26 and didn't need a 12 so I started using a 13-26 cassette. It didn't take me long to realise that I actually didn't need the 13 either but did need a 28, so I now use 14-28 cassette. I pedal the 52/14 to 35 mph (downhill) and then go aero and freewheel if I am in a hurry.

Thinking about my Cannondale gearing has made me realise that I haven't ridden it on about 2/3 of my favourite local routes because it is overgeared for me. I am looking forward to rectifying that and riding it more often!

I'll admit to a 53-39 double on the other road bike. I only put it on to ride a roller competition, but can't be ar$ed to take it off again. Interestingly, grinding up Devon hills on 39x26 is made a little easier by knowing I have a bike with lower gears at home.

I have the chainrings, bottom bracket, and left crank. Really, all I need is a 175 mm Campagnolo Racing Triple right crank. I think I will post in the Wanted forum and see if anybody can oblige.

Until you find one you could manage with any 175mm LH crank - ignore the any aesthetic considerations; no-one will notice.

I already have a nice left Chorus crank so I will use that if anybody comes up with a right.

I would chase up the local crankset that I heard about but the mate in question has not got a landline and dropped his mobile in a pint of OJ yesterday so I can't call him***!

I have already abandoned aesthetic considerations when I saw the price of Campag triple front mechs. I am going to buy an Ultegra mech for £15 instead, unless somebody can sell me a Campag one for less than that!

*** I made a joke about his phone working better on Vodafone than orange, but he didn't get it!

@ColinJ
I've been starting to think about replacing my 53/39/28** Campag racign triple with Comp triple (38.1) FD
Probably want to put an Impact triple and Shimano FD on instead.

Maybe we can come to an arrangement?

**the 28 ring is not Campag, I might be able to find the original 30T though.

Maybe ... The problem is though that I am on a very tight budget so I might be able to offer as much as you could get elsewhere. There is also a possibility (mentioned above) that a friend of a friend might do me a deal, but I don't know what he has or how much he wants. I just know it is a Campag triple.

I suppose the first question is - what length are your cranks? I ride 175 mm. I'm not convinced that the crank length makes that much difference, but that is what I am used to and is about right for someone of my height (6' 1").

I have an old 30 in my spares box. It looks about 50% worn though. I would probably be happy enough with a 28 until it wore out, then I would consider whether to replace it with another 28 or a 30.

yes - mine's 175mm cranks.
I've not fully explored the replacement options yet. I need to have a serious look at the numbers (both £ and gear inches) and then think about the effect of some likely changes whilst I'm out on a longish ride. PM when you know what your mate can/can't do for you and we'll talk some more.
