Me again being boring about spending £1k on a cyclescheme road bike.

There i was all set to buy a Trek 1.7 when I was introduced to Wilier. Fantastic looking Italian bikes that ride like the wind.

Trouble is my local local LBS (Brixton cycles) doesn't stock Wilier and my not so local LBS doesn't have model I want at a price i can afford. ( a Wilier Mortirolo)

Epic (out in Worcestershire) does and with a saving of £150 is sorely tempting me. They seem a real nice crowd and if I lived any where near would be an automatic choice.

So the choice is a Trek from the local LBS (with one years free servicing)
A Wilier from the not so local LBS, but with only a fitting service
or A Trip to Worcestershire but then with little back up locally.

My local local LBS will no doubt service anything I buy and remain helpful. I didnt actually know about the free service so have looking after my existing trek myself.

One last question. Is spending £1.1k on your first road bike really stupid. My current Trek 7.5 had done me proud this last year but with a new cyclescheme voucher I fancy a change.

i spent close to a grand on my 1st bike through the scheme. At first I felt the bike was too good for me & I should have gone for a cheaper model, but i really do love it & glad i went for the best i could at the time. I think if you buy a cheaper model you may end up regretting it, or spending more on uprgrades in the future xx(

Since its confession time, I spent just under £1.5k on my first road bike, I'm glad I just bit the bullet and done so an other than a new chain and oil I've spent nothing on yet in year and a half but its only seen 2,250mls. Before that I'd a flat bar Sirrus its now converted to dropped too and takes the abuse.

I went the £500 route then progressed to £1400 after 3 years. If you're sure you're going to stick at it then it's not a risk. I bought from the internet second time round and it's proved ok. The only thing you'll miss out on is the first service which, in truth, is just checking nuts and cables. Any major problem you'll take it back anyway. Having said that I would have like to go local but I got £500 off the price.

Thanks everyone

It's confirmed what I was thinking. The LBS will still get to do anything I can't but I quite fancy learning more about maintenance in any case. Lambeth run a cheap maintenance course for its residents, so perhaps I'll enroll in that.

This will be my second bike so at least I'm sure about the actual cycling

Anyone any view as to whether it'd be possible to lightly tour with Carbon bike? i was thinking of the London, Paris charity event.

Next up, how to upgrade the groupset:biggrin:

My bent has been close on £2k after the extras I want on it. Nothing wrong with spending more.

If you have your heart set on a Wilier, then make the effort to travel to a bike shop where you can get a test ride. If that costs you a Saturday and a train ticket, no worries, it's worth having the certainty, and it'll be fun too. I had to drive to Winchester and back the other week to make sure the VK tailbox for my bent was suitable for my work kit.

If they carry your baggage, then no problem at all!

Why upgrade a brand new groupset?
