Whilst I am an Islabike fan Iight, simple gears but good range, brake levers designed for children and not made out of plastic etc, there are other brands out there, but stick to the good brands. The other advantage for me was that my smaller sized child was able to move up a wheel size earlier than on the other brands, which gave an advantage when keeping up with older siblings.
I think weight does make a difference and also the gearing and crank length. I hate the standard BMX shaped bikes - they are heavy and often have one unsuitably large gear, though a well designed one would be different (no idea what sort of price they are but I've seen a couple of lighter ones, one of which his Dad was apparently something big in BMX a few years ago so I doubt it was cheap).
