I've a question for you. I'm currently starting to gather information on this bike. Since I'm now cling on to the both of my legs. I don't know the word quit. I've been fighting since I was born. I'm xxy. In short I've never had the privilege of a son or daughter.. Diabetic too . I've gone from riding motor bikes to a push bike
I'm now fully registered disabled. My wheel chair is my bike I made a trailer with a mate Chris with 4. 12volts 15amp gellcell. Push button on the bar when hooked upto 26 wheel riding a bike is all I've got left in life. So now I've bored the crap out of you. all. I'm.using it a assisted power hill are a killer. I was miss diagnosed 2006 6 years up the line I'm told amputation both legs. So on the disability side of it were would we be looking at. I've also got a fight with me and Humberside police. Even if I show them.im full registered disabled I'm told to get off my bike in the town centre. This is not the petrol assist bike. The trailer is lighter 1 battery and I can get all my solar panel on it. Converter to 12volt so I can charge phone and my speaker gets a bit quiet with out any one riding with me .im now looking to do a much further charity ride. And this little engine is going to help. So please if you can help me out. Be more then grateful.

but the mod team thought it best to start a new discussion.

I've often wondered about the legality of some of these ebikes, I've always thought that their speed was limited. There are a couple of these around Coventry that are quite quick, I was following one down Four Pounds Avenue a couple of week ago and he was pulling away from me and I was riding around 25 mph.

If, as your thread title suggests, you want to get a small petrol engine to assist your bicycle, you'd need to comply with all the legislation for a motorcycle; licence, insurance, registration etc. Otherwise your use of it will be illegal.

Read the title and for once be empathetic and understanding instead of an elitist knob.
You must be clearly cleverer than Globalti & I, I'm still confused as to the actual setup, what does the engine actually do, does it power the wheel or does it just provide electrical generation for the batteries that power the wheel? If it powers the wheel, then it will fall under the realms of a motorcycle, under 50cc a moped. It will have to be submitted for a MSVA with VOSA, then registered with DVLA, carry registration plates & be subject to VED, insurance etc. it would be illegal to ride it on the pavement.

If on the other hand it is just to assist the recharging of the batteries it if just like any other battery assisted bicycle.

As to riding on a no cycling area, disabled or not, it's a no cycling area, I suspect you would have to contact the local council & see if they would give you an exemption, it is not the Police's fault they are just enforcing the rules.

Yes I found the OP's post confusing as well.

Compliance with UK law...that's the question.

And there, currently, are more laws surrounding petrol based engines than there are electric power units. And more means harder.

As for being told to dismount whilst on a pedestrian precinct - that'd have to be taken up with the local council but I'd pop into citizens advice along the way in order to fully understand your rights and/or consult with one of the many charitable organisations that are set up to combat discrimination against the disabled.

I'm not sure why it's so confusing tbh, but to take the piss out of someone because of their academic ability is not nice.

The questions are:
1. Are 80cc petrol conversions legal? And any kind of advice to equivalents would be welcome.
2. Anyone know of a stockist where I can get further advice?
3. I'm after some support or advice as to whether it reasonable or illegal to ask a person with mobility issues to get off and walk in a pedestrian precinct - this point alone is at least worth a healthy debate around ethics morals and discrimination against a back drop of DDA and its replacement and the OP's Human Rights.

Come on guys, I've seen more effort into petty squabbles than trying to help someone who's actually asking for help. And well done to the mods for separating this thread.

I'm sorry as clearly stated earlier I DID find the original post very confusing, I WAS NOT taking the piss out of anybody I was seeking clarification, I didn't read the thread from which is was separated, maybe had I done so I would have understand more, I actually feel that it should be you who apologises for your assumptions!

No, in the UK, just like Mini-Moto's they are illegal.

Good summary of the salient points.

1. Ebay (and other places) show up a host of suppliers of bolt on 80cc engines. @Coxsy hull , you'll fall foul of Construction and Use regs at the very least if you want to use it in public. And then it will become a moped/motor bike, so will need insurance, VED etc. This isn't something the various sellers bring much attention to, as all they want to do is relieve you of your hard earned money.
2. I'd be wary of stockists giving unbiased advice.
3. Can't help on the making you get off and walk in a pedestrian precinct I'm afraid. From the outside it does sound like Humberside Police might be overstepping the mark, but on the other hand even your electric conversion is subject to various laws, regardless of how good a job your mate Chris did on it, so you may have to act a little carefully.

Sorry I can't be much more help.

I wasn't referring to you just the post that annoyed me and is typical of that particular poster.

From chasing the DVLA over a similar issue, electric only though, and checking what they'd said elsewhere. I think that if the trailer is powered, not the bike, there was little that could be done. The law changed April last year as regards electric assist.

It's been covered on here since then, but if remembered correctly the law remains the same with regards a powered trailer. Nothing covering it.

DDA has been replaced by the Equalities Act.
