700c x 25 Rear wheel recommendations

Hi,

Bought a pair of Mavic Open Sports (32 spoke) last year to replace the std wheels on my 2009 Defy 2.5. They run (well, ran) very well. Mavic rims, Tiagra hubs. Oh, and I'm an ex-rugby front row (100kg) - so not huge but no Chris Froome.

Done about 1000 miles on them, but recently have had repeated problems with spokes loosening on the rear. I've re-trued them and the runout is currently <1mm, and tension fairly even on the DS and NDS sides, but yesterday they developed a loose spoke on a ride, which gave me problems. I've since re-trued. Nipple needed about 3 turns.

I'm minded to have my LBS re-tension the whole wheel but buy a 36 spoke replacement. Given the state of the roads I accept that re-truing is an occupational hazard, but would prefer to have the 32h as a spare in the shed, with a new 36h on the bike.

Any recommendations (700c, 25 tyre, 36h, 3 cross, pref silver rim to match the front) ?

Andy

I went to a lbs when I needed one a while back they seemed to be be the only ones selling a rear wheel on its own.

I'd go for both of your solutions. Are you aware that the Mavic open sport is available as a 36 as well as a 32!

Hi, no, didn't know there was a 36H version - I'd go for that. Not found one during my searches - do you know who stocks them?

Bought the 32H version from my LBS (support your local LBS - up to a point!) but don't think he has the 36H.

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
Get your wheel rebuilt with some new spokes and nipples (I recommend Swiss DT double butted competition spokes(2mm/1.8mm/2mm) and brass nipples). I have had trouble with wheels in the past that sound similar to yours but also have a set of factory wheels on my road bike that have been untouched since I left the shop with the brand new bike. The components in your wheel are good ones so they should be as good as new after only 1k. My road bike is on 1.5k and I am 95kg and not particularly gentle on the 32 spoke wheels (think bunny hops and riding down steps on a 700x23c tyre!).

Your wheels are more than capable of supporting your 100kg with 32 spokes if built properly.

I got mine from Julies Cycles in Leicester ( I know that's a way away) maybe try ringing your LBS he might be able to order one if he doesn't keep one in stock. Mine is on a Tiagra hub.

Thx for that ILS. I'm contemplating buying the components (Open Pro 36H rim, Tiagra hub), and doing my own build. I'll get Roger Musson's book and build the jig etc. If I take my time I'm confident I can do it - then I'll rebuild the OpenSport with the DB spokes. Always good to learn new skills.

Ive had a 36 spoke Mavic open pro with Tiagra hub on the rear of my Tricross for a few years now, used for fully loaded touring and commuting and still true.

Still banging the drum for Rose, I have had both a set of touring wheels and a set of these http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/road-wheel-set-28700c-xtreme-airline-4--105-5700/aid:162960 road wheels. Both sets have remained perfectly true in spite of being hammered both home and abroad.

(You can of course get higher spec rims and hubs but for the cash this make up was my choice )
