Shimano removal tools start at £2.99 posted on eBay (£1 posted if you don't mind waiting for it to come from China) and they are so useful that it really isn't worth not having one.

The Huret will cope with 28 teeth if you make sure the spring is in the 28T position, I only realised what that was for a couple of years ago, but the Suntour will work much better. I'd recommend picking up a pair of Suntour Power Shifters too, they a big improvement over pure friction shifters.

There might be a bit of money in the Regina freewheel if it's in good condition and you can get it off in one piece.

The Simplex retrofriction and Suntour power system tried to equalise the pressure when moving the lever backwards and forwards. The Suntour didn't grind but sort if quickly clicked, particularly popular for bar end touring types. Not to be confused with Suntour first indexed system Accushift.

Not heard of this. Searched a bit. Read a bit. Watched a video. Still don't understand - why would you want your shifters to grind in one direction instead of move smoothly?

It's actually a very smooth action because the only thing you're working against is the spring in the derailleur, there's no friction when you pull back. You would probably have to try a set to appreciate them.
