Haha no chance - I have never done the sunday run so am not going to do my first one on a fixed gear.

Steve

Its character building!!
I went on holiday and wasnt as fit, had only done a few rides on the fixed and went and did the club run on the fixed. And kept up.
Its all good for you YC, i mean even when i got to the top of one very long hard hill and i felt like being sick it was good for me

why? you still have to pedal over the slopes no matter what you ride, just ride within you limits

Bad advice i think. YC is not that old, and him pushing in big gear when hes not used to it with/could make his knees even worser. I know when i had 65" when i first started riding fixed my knees did ache. So him running 74" isnt going to be much good.
If i was you YC, i would put a 19t cog on so you get 65", then when your used to it(you will know when) put an 18t on. That i think will do your knees better then just going straight for 74", and him spinning will get him even fitter aswell.
But then others might disagree.
And when i started riding fixed 65" was what people were recogmending. At 68" some think i am over geared for club rides.
My gearing will go up to either 71 or 75 in the summer when the runs are faster.

the time has come for me to replace my chainrings, i thoughts i was riding a 53t front ring, but its actually a 52!!!

if i put a 53 on, will i need to.....
1. adjust the chain length
2. adjust the front derallier
3. notice any difference!!??

any info is great, thanks!!!

You may need to raise the derailier SLIGHTLY but not by much.

53's are a nice ring' - real nice, de-rig' for racing, now.

My sizes are 42 inner 53 outer...i don't need anything else.

I agree sort of, but its not use that makes joints stronger its recovery after pushing the boundaries, so if he's used to a low gear then a light effort higher gear will stress the joints and muscles, if this is then followed by proper rest and recovery he's get better, have less issues and find improvements.

However I'm also normally wrong so don't take my word for it, but this is how I work and train, have done in sport all my life, I'm not one to be wrapped in training cotton wool.

Push the limits and see where you can go, if it hurts back of a little bit but not much, pain is just the body saying its doing or done something its not used too, TOO MUCH pain is not good though, it has to hurt but not excessive, listen to your body it'll tell you when its too much.

I may try the staurday runs on it one time - its not as far as the sunday and it only about 33 miles. But there are some quite big hills, so when I next see some of the club coaches I will ask if I could borrow a 19 tooth. I seem to remember them saying that they have some spare so I can change it if I want to - my clubs great:biggrin:

Someone in my club has loads of fixed gear stuff. All different sized sprockets and other stuff for fixed. Thats all you need

I was using 53/39 and a 53/42 with a 12-21 and a 13-24 on two of my bikes. Tbh the 53 was becoming too much of an effort for my legs to maintain any rythem and I was using the big chainring less and less.
I have now switched them both for a 50/36 and a 50/34 cpmpact. I dont know why I punished myself for so long
