It's official, I'm still a bit rubbish at cycling. I've just done my longest bike ride this morning and I'm aching all over. It was a measley 50 miles in total (which is nowt compared to others here), but I'm not put off or anything (yet).

Hats off to most of you guys on this forum for the amout of mileage you do.
;)

Well done, there are plenty around here who don't manage that much. A couple more weeks and you should be ready for 100km, then 75miles, then the full century. At which point you can start eating as much cake as you like, and appear to be a demi-god at work.

Well done on doing the 50, as you said you did the longest ride for you and that was the 50 so it will hurt, but the next time you do it, it won't hurt half as much, and the following time not at all, well as long as you allow recovery time.

Congratulations on your achievement, be proud of what you have done, don't dwell on pain it will soon go and you will still have done the 50 ;):biggrin:

I did my longest ever ride today too, 45 miles (only meant to be 35 but got lost!!!) am thinking I will barely be able to stand tomorrow, so believe me you're not on your own and you did an extra 5 miles on me! (Does this mean I can have pizza and beer tonight and not feel guilty now?;))

Well done, 50 miles can hurt, depends on the terrain, but look at it as an achievement, next milestone 100 miles, that will hurt.;)

Well done! I've been cycling since end of October last year and haven't quite had the heart to do a 50 miler yet. I've been doing regular 29-34 milers though in anticipation. I haven't yet found a route that doesn't involve loads of hills, otherwise I'd have gone for it. One of my favourites is up the Llanberis Pass and down the Ogwen into Bethesda, but I find that it can get very windy (well it has *always* been very windy going through the Ogwen for me). Went up the Llanberis Pass and down into Beddgelert today which was nice, probably one of my favourites, although coming out of Beddgelert towards Rhyd Ddu was deceptively on a gradient not in my favour. I was thinking of combining the two which would be approx 50 miles.

Be sure to go for a recovery ride tomorrow, or perhaps even later on today.

I would disagree with that. I would say eat well, rest and leave it until the stiffness has gone before going out again. Just my ha'p'orth.

Well done Mate, spin those legs tomorrow. BTW, how long did it take you?

Well done!!

However you look at it it is a great achievement. It was probably something like four hours of tough exercise which is good going by any standard. Running a marathon takes less time!

London to Brighton is about 54 miles so it is a signifiacnt distance. Keep it up! Your are also about 2000 calories up so you can eat lots of cake now.

good reasons for a very gentle bike ride tonight or tomorrow, get rid of the lactic acid and do a few stretches on warm muscles or risk injury, should help reduce time to recoup. along with good rest and food intake. well done i am slowly increasing my mileage, it takes a strong mind or great scenery to keep on going,

Cheers guys! I will deffinately keep on building on the mileage (once I recover), and I will go out for a gentle stroll tommorow just to loosen up a bit but thanks for the words of encouragement.

Having had loads to eat and time to reflect, I'm actually quite chuffed now. It took me roughly 3 and a half hours (solo) to do but it is very hilly around here (West Yorkshire). The mistake I made was taking a heavy ruck-sack (with coffee flask and spare anvil etc).
Bring on the next Olympics, I'm ready ;) (the pizza eating event).

congrats Zaid - please note however that walking and cycling use different muscles. Your 'stroll to loosen up' won't work those bits that got you through 50 miles on the bike. Do both, a few miles on wheels and then walk to and from the pub!
