I have a thing where that somewhere between 3 & 5 miles I start feel off/ill, I get a bit of a headache, my stomach doesn't feel right, I warm up quite a bit & start to sweat, but I've found if I just ignore it & push on I'm then fine. Whether it's a nerves thing or what I don't know

I used to get that. My better half, who is a runner calls it the "toxic ten" and its common amongst runners after ten minutes. I found that I got it at about 20 minutes on the bike and if I went through it, was fine after. I used to get it walking any distance (after about 1 hour, so 3 milesish) and it felt like it was blood sugar related (tests say it wasn't). Basically, I was just unfit. Now I don't seem to get it often.

EDIT: Not saying you are unfit, just how it was for me!

You can say it because it's right, maybe it is a time thing & not a distance thing, I also thought about blood sugar, but will hold hands up & say I don't understand all that really. But I have noticed that now I've started mountain biking it's still there but not as pronounced, maybe I just go out of the gate too fast on the road bike & I'm a little more leisurely on the MTB.

I get it during the first 5 miles of most rides just feel rubbish and start to think I should just head back but no sooner have I thought that everything just falls into place and I start enjoying the ride.

I think it is just to do with the body warming up and as you said toxins or the chemicals that the body produces during exercise rushing around the body must level off after a time. Eaither way unless it's a hyper or hypo it's well worth pushing through to see what can be achieved later in the ride it may just surprise and supass anything you thought you could do.

@Wetdog Sorry for hi-jacking your thread apologies, but it's nice to know I'm a little more 'normal' than I thought I was.

Just keep on biking as far as you can - useful if you can get someone to fetch you and the bike when you have maxed out. Better still if you have to wait for them to turn up whilst you are in a pub.
