Only 455 from alcohol?
It's 'primary cause of death' as recorded on death cert. Alcohol could have played a large part in many of the circulatory diseases, cancers etc, but not nec as primary cause of death.

I found that pic/graph realy interesting, and have saved it for future study.

poisoning, falls and 'hanging and strangulation' are higher than road deaths - in the case of falls, much higher.
That is a really good image - is it from 'Information is Beautiful'?
It's a Grauniad thing

I thought it surprising "hanging and strangulation" was so common, even compared to some of the cancers. It's particularly odd if you think that a newborn child is as likely to die from being hanged as to some of those other conditions.

Would there be circumstances where road deaths, could be noted as a different cause of death if someone died later in hospital?

Nice image, thank you for sharing that. WRT transport accidents, 679+317+121 does not equal 1815 (I am assuming that the ends are subsets of the nodes to which thay are attached) so the cyclists are in the remaining however-many-it-is (my mental arithmatic doesn't run to that and I can't be bothered to start up a calculator).
