Well done. If you only drank 150ml then that's all you needed, if it wasn't enough then you would have known because your body sends you messages. Some people over hydrate themselves by drinking too much, but you drank roughly the right amount.

Angelfishsolo I will try the 25/75% mix on my next 40 miler, hopefully later this month. Planned a better route taking me further into the Vale. This time I had to loop into Radyr and back out and another loop between 2 roundabouts to get over the 40 miles. As you're up the road you might know the area. Been working overtime on 'mapmyride.com' and 'ridewithgps.com' to sort the next ride out.

Just sent a friends request so I can see the route in Mapmyride.

In answer to Gazp I live iin the Llandaff area of Cardiff so my route was - http://www.cycle-rou...0sky.com/23658/ Let me know if the link does not work. I messed up my mileage when planning this and you can see at the end I had to deviate through Radyr and back and also loop between 2 roundabouts to get the distance over 40 miles.
Since planned a better route on mapmyride to avoid this http://www.mapmyride...s/view/49391644

Nigel - Thanks so much for the response and wow at how far you've cycled and your routes! I'm a Cardiff lad living out at Pontyclun at the moment but we'll shortly be moving back to the Whitchurch area. I know the roads around your routes pretty well although only recently have I started increasing my distances and using more roads.

My commuting route now goes down some of your route - from home, miskin, llantristant rd (killer hills), llandaff, cathedral road, through town down to Cardiff Bay and back.

Other recent routes have gone from home east towards Pencoed and back, but i've not gone down to Cowbridge and then either west or east from there yet. I did mark out one route where i went down to Cowbridge, Bonvilston, down to culverhouse cross, through ely, st fagans and back up llantristant road to home which equated to about 25 miles although all this is on a hardtail rather than a road bike and i'm yet to crack 20 miles in one go so you're far ahead of me.

Hoping to get a road bike in the near future and maybe once i've cracked a few more miles i can join you on a ride.

GazP you must cover a fair number of miles with your commuting plus the traffic along the Llantrisant Road into Cardiff must be a nuisance. Sure you will soon up the mileage when you have a go at it. Pontyclun to Cardiff and back must be improving your fitness and I reckon you could do the 20 miles now. Keep in touch and let me know how you are getting on.

Thank you Angelfish solo for the offer. I would enjoy the company one day. Since the ride on Sunday I haven't seen the sun and it.s rained every day and is at this moment. Been dying to get out on the bike again for a shorter spin but the rain takes the enjoyment away for me.

I can understand that. It is great when MTBing but less fun on the roads

Recent journeys from home all the way to work are roughly 15 miles each way. Traffic on Llantristant Rd isn't actually too bad - far worse down North road coming back when i go that way - it's more the way Llantristant Rd sucks you in on a nice downhill part but then follows it up with another hill and then down and back up etc - it's like that down most of the road as i'm sure you know.

Trying to keep at it - went out in the rain today and did home to Pencoed, back through Pontyclun and to home which was 13.7 miles and approx 58 mins. Only a couple of hills which was far nicer than the commute, definitely feel stronger than last time i did the route just over a week ago and i don't mind the rain at all really. (Hate the cold though!)

Think it's more about finding some sort of route that doesn't have too many up and downs but means i can go further and just get used to the extra miles.

Will do, cheers Nigel!

Edit - Just checked your first post and saw you upgraded to a Focus Cayo earlier in the year - how are you finding it? (Really looking forward to getting on a road bike)

Gaz & Nigel - I am a Manchester lad but used to do a lot of business in S.Wales (Furniture Manufacturers) so know Pontyclun, Llantrissant, Bridgend & S.Wales corridor pretty well from years gone by. Many happy memories. I seem to remember there was 'Power Station Hill' at Treforest? Never cycled it but my memory is that it would be a bit of a challenge?!

Hi Chris. If it's the hill i'm thinking off it's now been made into a new bypass road. The hill is still there but the road up is a totally different gradient now and it winds only a little before carrying on down to Llantristant. There are now roads off this if you want to actually go into church village/llantwit fardre etc. Still it would have been one hell of a hill to cycle up - i always remember thinking it was bad enough going up in the car!
