I don't use a gps to plan a route, I just use it to record what I've done. I usually just look at a map to plan a route, I find that easier.
I dont use a gps to plan a route either, I just put the route on it, it was just an option to route planning, I can use maps, I must have street maps of almost every county in England and most of Wales and Scotland, though to be fair they are a little large scale for the bike. The route on the gps unit, just makes it a little easier to follow if your just doing a route to follow, its not for auto routing like a sat-nav, and whilst it has some use if you go off the trail to finding it again i.e. you in relation to the route, just head in the general direction of the route till you pick it up, it wont re-route itself (some do), so the ability to get home is still needed in what ever form that its, usually road signs do the job, asking someone.
I can also get around with out a map and compass just using the sun and time of day, and the stars at night, though again its a lot less accurate, without reference points, (though in fairness I am not as good as I was)

I primarily use it for route tracking for analysis after (for what good it does to improve my cycling lol), but it has help me to tackle rides with increasing elevation gains, know what to expect can help, unlike coming upon a hill so steep you look at it and you dont do it, by increasing the hills I do and knowing roughly what to expect and where, I have been able to do more difficult rides. Like this one http://app.strava.com/activities/27330856 this was incredible tough for me, the section that starts at about 9.2 miles lasts for 6.69 miles climbs 429ft avg grade isn't much at 1.2% and a max grade of 6.7% but it was into 4-5mph head wind all the time, my avg speed for it was 9.9mph with a VAM of 194 it took me 40min 29".
This is pretty much the same segment on strava.

Jeeeezuzhtittychrist! That's looks like a bugger! But what fun coming down!

This is the biggest hill I've done so far, The Kirkstone Pass.

I did it on my hybrid, so it was slow, even for me!

Thought I recognised the name, and you did it twice, we dont have anything like that here, I didn't come down the same way, though there was a real unexpected short climb like climbing out of the bowels of the earth, well thats what I thought at the time, in hindsight it wasnt that bad, just I was still hurting from that climb into the wind, and they say its fun.

I'm gonna hang my head in shame guys! I went up a little hill outside Helmdon yesterday and ran out of legs about 2/3rds up. 0.3 mile and 75ft elevation gain. KOM 1 min 11 secs, my time 2 mins 51 secs and, AND 33 seconds breather. What a fairy lightweight!

If you want a good route planner try this http://ridewithgps.com/routes/new, it doesn't however export well to the Garmin Edges, as the V.P. thing doesn't work right, though it will give you turn by turn with roads (there are ways to overcome the V.P. thing)
Sorry to hi-jack, Thank you for the link to that planner, I use Endomondo but it's not as accurate by the looks of it as this one. I now know why I chugged a bit on the first 4 miles, might not be big to you guys standards, but as a complete novice it explains it to me  http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1937559

Congrats to the OP on the mileage

I dont know, they look a bit wicked inside the first 10 miles, rode through Sprotbrough to Warmsworth, via the falls, that was a bit tricky first time.
