Might also be worth asking for insurance details at the same time and telling them you'll follow it that way. Depending on age their excess may be a big chunk of that £385 and adding in the extra premiums a claim will cost them (if they are clever enough to do the maths) might tip it.

God I hate drivers. I use a motorbike and obviously I cycle, and it seems that the other drivers on the road are always actively trying to kill me. I can't give much advice other than to agree with people saying join British Cycling or CTC.

Not only would the CTC help with cases like this, they'd also help if you happened to cause and accident, as public liability insurance is included.
