Looking at getting something as in the thread title for use as my main and also winter commuter, having recently started commuting in on a nice MTB taking as much off road as I can I am finding it much more enjoyable than the rat race amongst the cars... The added benefit seems to be that my back is standing up to the MTB position much better than with drops!
So what is out there (new) with 26" wheels, flat bar, rigid fork and disc brakes which can also take full mudguards and a rack? Carrera Subway is the obvious but after that I'm struggling to find much! Ridgeback Cyclone is in stock online at a couple of places and it gets a good review (doesn't have disc brakes but frame and forks are capable).
The reason I want to stick with 26" (and not 700cc / 29er etc) is that as and when I upgrade the nice MTB I can use the parts I take off that and put them on the commuter (including wheels!)
The other option is to buy something older second hand and replace the forks with rigid but I've not got the tools for that so would have to factor in an LBS doing that...
Any other bikes I'm missing with this configuration for under £500....?
