No I bought some padded shorts, I think it is just because I am out of 'practice'. I am sure it will soon disappear!

So I should be aiming for an lower gear, and increased cadence? I have always in the past gone with higher gears, resulting in a slower harder cadence. I very rarely leave the biggest ring on the front mech, as anything lower feels like a lot of work that doesn't get me very far...

53 days to go, so hopefully I should be able to get up to speed by then.
Sudocreme works wonders if not! ^_^

I don't know what your experience is, so hopefully I'm not being patronising. IfI am then please accept my apolgies. Don't think of your gears as linear. The 1 to x on your rear cassette when the chain is on your inner chain ring(s) are not all less than the 1-x when on the outer chain ring. If you need to know more than that then there are people on here that can bamboozle you with the science!!

 Thanks! My understanding of gears is fairly basic!

I spend a lot of time in the biggest front cog, and the smaller 1/2 of the back set. I know this is probably wrong, but it feels like I am getting somewhere.

Given the same amount of power / fitness level you can either go faster on shorter distances on slower on longer distances. To increase both speed and distance you need more power output / fitness level.

I have a triple front and 8 rear, when struggling I find it better to go smaller at front, and in top half of rear as opposed to staying on middle and then a larger rear ring as this allows me to spin easier and I can keep the same speed if not higher.

I see no shame in having a triple

See you there buddy! I've gone for the 52 mile....
Don't treat it as something to get nervous or anxious for, enjoy it!

Just keep your legs ticking over 5-6 times a week, the mileage will come, and so will the smile on your face when you've accomplished something you were doubtful about!!
