Once again thank you for all the replies, they really are appreciated, and whilst 100 is probably the next target, just the thought of it leaves me exhausted.

hopefully at some point next year I will be able to leave a post saying I have done it.

All the best and safe riding to everyone

Didn't think I would be adding anymore but had my first 50 miler, and tonight had another first.

Coming home from work and had a car pull straight out on me at a roundabout, ended up sat on the grass on the roundabout.

No injuries to me and no damage to the bike. Woman driving the car slowed down, had a look and then drove off.

Thought about calling the police but not really sure what they could do.

Wouldn't have minded but I had an illuminous yellow jacket, with an illuminous yellow HVV on top, simply because it has flashing LED's runnning round it,

3 lights on the front, two flashing and one extremely bright steady light, two flashing red lights on the back, trousers were black, but with reflective flashes on them.

I was lit up like a christmas tree!!

Well done with your achievement you have done very well. I am going through a similar thing although I do not need to loose weight. I had a high tibial knee osteotomy at the end of March this year, if I was older I would have had a knee replacement. My thigh muscle is totally wasted and my knee is always swollen and feels numb/stiff, although I am in no pain. I can walk pretty well with a slight limp but cannot handle steps very well. I really need to build up my muscles and cycling seems the best option, also I enjoy it unlike going to the gym. So far I am doing 12 miles every weekend on mainly flat roads, although I also have my 17 month old daughter in a rear child seat that does add quite a bit more weight. I am going to start partially commuting to work, driving the first 7 miles and cycling the rest around 5 miles. This is also mainly on the flat as my knee is not to keen on hills yet. Not the best time of year to be doing it, but I have bought some decent gear. Hopefully I will increase it and cycle the lot of it with time. Hopefully I will make a full recovery, and just watch what I do as I really do not want another knee operation soon. Well done again, hopefully I will soon in the not to distant future be able to get up to 50 miles also.

inspiring stuff, Alan. Three stone is a tremendous amount of weight to lose.

Every so often I meet people who've turned around their entire bodily lives by cycing. It's a glowing testament to the potential within all of us.

That's a great story, similar to my own. Roughly eighteen months ago I weighed in at just under 21 stone, after starting out on short 3-5 mile jaunts round the local golf course on my mountain bike I got the bug and invested in a Felt Z45 carbon road bike, special deal on Wiggle, and now regularly do 50-60 mile rides on Saturday mornings, did the BHF Crystal Palace to Hastings ride in 5hrs, did my first sportive, Vo2 great ride, 60 miles in 4hrs, even with a puncture and have even done a couple of Gorrick cross country mountain bike races, hardest hour I've ever done on a bike.
The upshot of all of this is I now weigh in at 14 1/2 stone and still dropping, albeit slowly.
I know I'm preaching to the converted but cycling really has changed my life, the best part of it all is I really do enjoy it which makes it all the more easier to keep up.
If I can just get through the winter with a decent fitness level I'll be raring to go come spring.

Keep up the good work.

well done. I too was over 20 stone , closer to 22 than i liked !!
i started riding again in september and have lost 2 stone. another 2 stone and i will be where i want to be at the moment. i hope i can lose nearly 7 stones like you did.
thats just commuting. and it has changed my outlook on travelling. i have to get to our head office in Rickmansworth for next 3 days. I am riding a good chunk of it, and using train for the rest. 2months ago i would have jumped in the car and driven fopr the hour and half.

good work to all who have changed things with cycling
