Wout fails to come from behind to beat Remco. Didn’t see that coming, Wout is definitely missing something. Very weird sprint for third.

Thought WvA would take that easily. He seemed to stop and start his sprint twice

Poor old Wout.
He said in interview, apparently I don't have a sprint any more!
Great boost for Remco though

Perhaps he hadn't done much sprint training?

Compare with mads pederson whose been training with the motor scooter etc. (doc on TV!)

Perhaps WVA as a domestique doesn't get the 1 to 1 training that mads, remco, pog, Jonas, MVDP gets...

I’m wondering if successive serious crashes have taken something out of him. His knee looks a mess so it wouldn’t be surprising.

A year or two back if either of those two went solo and got a lead of nearly a minute with 30km remaining you would back them to stay away. Today there was a point at just under 20km to go where I thought the pair working together were going to get caught. Remco will only improve with more racing, I’m not so sure with Wout.

Has Wout lost it mentally, physically, or a bit of both?
He's seemed unwilling to fight for the right position in groups, has been hanging off the back as selections happen, but digs very deep to still be close to the podium at the end, and now gets out sprinted by a GC rider who has been injured most of the off season....

Everyone has the issue of suffering when in a breakaway with Remco. He is simply so aero, that you don't recover behind him as much as he does behind you. Remco has won multiple GT stages in multiple GT's, once he had shipped time on a bad GC day, in this same way. People just die off behind him or are fried by the time they get to the finish.
It's probably best to sit in and let him go and try to bridge later (which doesn't work either since he rides as fast as the reduced peloton once he is away for the same aero reason). 😉
Feel for Wout, but maybe he'll be back in proper shape for the Tour. His shape seems to be improving.

Chances are his legs weren't fresh from P-R!
Could I run a marathon 5 days after last one and be competitive with someone fresh - no chance!!
