It's good that you are so organised. I end up only knowing I will ride a sportive a week previous to the closing date so then I only have a short time to eat right, sleep right, climb some hills and make sure my bike is OK. The rides you mention aren't in my patch I afraid. Thats a big 144 miler! We did a hilly 160 miler last summer and it was quite a ride. Good luck. On a separate subject, I'd be interested if you care whether the sportive is commercial or charity-after costs and what is the most you will pay? I got asked for £45 this year for 'an enter on the day', on roads I train on. I said no.

I tend to ride sportives based on whether they fit in with my other plans. For 2012 any sportive I do choose to ride will be to see different areas to my normal rides.
I may do New Forest (well organised)
Hve already booked the Somerset Hills (Never been round that part of world on a bike AND it was only £15!)
Oh and Dartmoor Classic (only sportive I like to come back to as it is the best all round for organisation and occasion)
Possibly the Brighton to Brighton later in year.

I pay around £15/16 and raise around £300/500 on each event - i know that non of the entrance money goes to charity but they are well organized and i tend to go in for events in areas i dont know - i meet a lot of new people - it makes it more enjoying - the reason i plan in advance is so that i have a target to aim for - i just cant go out cycling just for the sake of it - ok i am retired but it gives me an interest with ambition.

By raising money for cancer/heart foundations also makes it worthwhile - this may sound very boring but my wife and i enjoy the events - we book in a hotel for after each event - and i get plastered - i must point out my wife doesnt cycle - she likes shopping/the soaps

I agree with you - but when you retire - the other plans fit around the hobby - and yes i enter events in areas where i dont train.

If you are ever in the Peak District, and it has been the focus of about 8 sportives this year, drop me a line and we can certainly meet up. By the way, the Peak District is called after the Picks, who came this far south. We don't have any peaks, apart from Bleaklow and maybe Kinder. It's certainly nothing to worry about.

you have brought back memories - in the late 80s i had a pub in Bramhall - i was then a marathon runner - a mate of mine had a pub in Castleton i think it was called The Castle - I would park up there and run to Hope - turn left and on to Edale then Booth - from there on it was tough but there was a good drop down Winnats pass into Castleton - and a pint of real ale - yes if im ever in the area i will drop you a line.

Sorry to gatecrash, but is there a decent online calendar of 2012 Sportives/Audax/organised rides. Would like to do 1 or 2 next year to see if it's my cup of tea.

Cheers

I'll be doing the Norwich 100 again, I really should make more of a day of it, with a couple of pub stops

Apart from that I'm aiming to do Audaxes up to Randonneur 1000 next season.

Oh, and of course the Dunwich Dynamo again :wahhey:

This site is good for ride listings too HERE
