Simple.
The Summer bike is precious. The winter bike can get wet.

The real reason is the winter bike will be heavier and have full mudguards and lamps.
The summer bike will never have lamps, mudguards and is lighter than light.:biggrin:

Only two  ??

Seriously tho...my last good bike was used through part of the winter, and the alloy/ carbon fork suffered corrosion in the brake mount holes. Also salt will find any scratches / damage thats exposed the undercoat or worse, bare metal.
Shame to spoil a good bike when you can have a hack / winter bike.

That's my problem, I've only got 3, I need another bike

With mudguards of course to deflect the liquid sunshine:biggrin:

Also... most summer bikes are 9 or 10 speed. The chain and running gear are correspondingly light, prone to wear and need a little extra care.
My winter bike is clad with Shimano Sora 8 speed. The componentry is of course heavier...more able to withstand the rigours of water, salt and general abuse.

The same reason why some blokes have a winter and summer car.

The sunny day car is a classic, elegant, head turner that is pristeen and worth a fortune.
The winter car is a hack.

2 bikes yes. Winter bike summer bike no. I have my bike, which I use year round, and my other bike, which is a fat-tyred hybrid for going off-road with my kids.
