1st interview for 9 years ......Gulp, I think.

I was going to post this tomorrow morning but I shall probably be a bit nervous by then. Anyway, I thought I'd post it now to build up to nervous as I have been rather unmoved by the whole thing so far.

I guess the trouble with being fully occupied means I don't get much practise at interviews. I've more practise at interviewing than being on the recieving end. So, I shall either be extremely focused and get good focused questions or completely unfocused and get lots of HR type questions which I shall waffle my way through and end up looking like a clown out of his suit for the day.

I am boning up on my business speak this afternoon, my hair is cut, suit clean, know where I'm going etc... Have I forgotten anything? They've already rang me 3 times to make sure I'm coming. Is this a good or a bad sign. Good because they're keen or bad because one half doesn't know what the other half has already done?

Hope it goes with a snap and pop Crackle! Good luck.

Do you really want the job?

Get some good examples of things you've done clear in your head to draw upon tomorrow.

Ringing you is good - the business are keen to interview you and HR never know what's going on. I was very badly treated at a recent interview - left waiting for fully two hours before being called due to their own administrative mix-up. I thought I gave a poor interview, partly due to my anger at having been made to wait, and partly due to my loss of respect for the interviewers. To my surprise they offered me the post and I took it on the basis that it'd be an improvement on my current position, and that HR always have a hand in these things but rarely impact on your day-to-day work. Now really looking forward to getting started.

Best of luck anyhoo

I'd say they are desperate! Maybe lots of others have dropped out and they're getting short of candidates. Could mean you have a better chance.

Doesn't mean you're not the perfect candidate and this is just the job for you. There's no harm in getting rid of the competition.;)

Know the Person Specification inside out. Prepare a succinct example to illustrate every point, even the seemingly minor ones. Make sure that by the end of the interview you have used them all. Examples should show you are a STAR
Situation - What was the problem
Task - What did you need to do about it
Action - What did YOU do (make sure your individual contribution to team efforts is shown, but don't claim sole credit)
Result - What was the improvement

There are lots of crap interviewers aound who don't ask the right questions. If by the end of the interview they haven't given you the opportunity to tell them something that you wanted to get across and you think could swing it in your favour, use the 'have you got any questions for us' bit, at the end to get it across.

If the job's right for you it will be easy and you will take control of the interview.

Good luck

Good question: Don't know and possibly why I'm not nervous. I do need the interview practise though and I shall see on the day whether the job and people suit me.

You can place a bit too much emphasis on preparation. It often comes down to whether you get on with the people interviewing you, it can be that simple.

Perhaps things have changed in the last 9 years...

Having done interviews, structured to skills profiles etc.. I know what to expect. If they give me a good structured interview aka your example I won't have a problem and I'll either fit the profile or i won't. All I meant was, even taking that into account, often, you also build an affinity with interviewers which helps present you in a positive light.

Getting on well is not enough though. I've interviewed people who had me in stitches for 20 minutes but I didn't employ them at the end of it much as I'd have liked to because they didn't tick all the profile boxes.

I'm sure you'll be fine Crackle. Best of luck with it. I wouldn't necessarily think competitors are dropping out. I had a test and interview on Monday and they were very quick getting out invites and rang up more than once, the test room was swamped on Monday!
