Bought a socket/ratchet set from Wickes last nite for £26.99, as I needed to get the job done before Thursday, (new job 16.5 mile commute, there and back) as I fancied using my old Carrera TDF 2007 as my commuter bike. 14mm crank bolt cannot be taken off as the outer diameter of the 14mm socket wont fit into the recess of the crank arm. Stupid bluddy idea. Why not make the recess a few mm wider?

Gotta take the socket set back later. Any ideas about brands that make thin walled sockets that will fit in the recess of the crank arm? Sunrace R80 crankset. Recess is approx 16/17mm in diameter.

TIA

I have a crank extractor with a 14mm one end and 15mm at other end thin walled socket attached. Otherwise find and engineering workshop and get them to turn your socket down a touch on a lathe. Only take 30 seconds. They may even do it for free. If you are not too bothered about using a torque wrench tubular box spanners will also sort you out.

Good idea that man!

I'll have to nip up to the LBS tomorrow, see if they have a crank extractor/crank nut wrench.

I may try a box spanner beforehand. Thanks for that!

Is your socket 0.5 inch drive? If so, get quarter or three eighths one and the 14mm socket for that size will probably fit.

Yes, it is. That was my concern when I bought it. I didn't really want a 1/2" square drive, but that's all they had. I'll see if they've had any more stock in later today and, if so, exchange the 1/2 for a smaller drive.

Gracias!

An additional thought: if there is a B & Q nearby, they sell a range of min Mac tools, including a small double sided ratchet drive, quarter inch on one side and three eighths on the other...I think they are about £5. They also sell sockets in a range of sizes, so you may get sorted completely there.

Other DIY shops are availible:smile:

There's a B&Q not far from here, see if I can get there later today. Can't find what you are referring to via their website, tho. Sounds very handy.

I used to work for Focus DIY, wish the place still existed, you could get anything and everything from there.

I think it was in the MacAllister 'Stubby' range, but like you, I don't see it on the site. Having said that, their site is usually pants, so if there's a branch close by, it may be worth a look.

Yeah, I hear ya. I'll get the missus to take me when she gets back from work. Sure she'll love accompanying me down the aisles of a hardware store, ya gotta treat 'em from time to time

Thanks for your help, GBC. Appreciate it!

I had the same problem a couple of months ago. Once I had got the bolt free with the crank extractor, I replaced it with an 8mm hex key bolt. Looks neater and avoids the problem next time.

I think that's the road I'm going to go down, too. Ended up taking the socket set back to Wickes, getting a refund, and then finding that Halfrauds had had a delivery. Got a 1/4 drive for a fiver less, and it did the trick.
