105 STI's take 2 clicks to change direction

I have a roadie with 105 shifters ( must be about 07/08 age ) I wouldn't say i've used the bike excessively over the years ... i.e. i've ridden my other bikes more.

Basically my problem is that when i move up the gears on the rear cassette, and then need to move back down, it takes 2 clicks to make the change of direction. The same is true when going down and wanting to go back up. Either way, its 2 clicks to change the direction.

After that, each click on the STI is a change on the cassette as expected.

I've swapped the whole setup across different frames on more than one occasion and used new cables / outers each time ... so i dont think its cable friction type thing.

Is there any obvious tips / things to look at / change out ?

Lubrication, cable run or at the outside if the mech is getting on years the spring in the mech has lost it's power.

I think you will find it has something to do with trimming the gears, mine are the same, but it only happens when changing up with the smaller lever

Or they may not be set up correctly, as I have had that as well in the past, because I am at work I am having to visualise it as it is an automatic action when I change. If you go onto the Shimano website, all the tech docs are available for download on how they work and how to set them up, also what all the clicks are as I have just had a look.

Going up to a larger sprocket yes you can trim, dropping down a sprocket is a problem, it's either correctly indexed or it's not.

Yes if drops too far you can trim it back up but if it's dropping not far enough then the mechs not springing back towards the start position as it should.

Just been for a ride and I have 2 clicks too to change direction.

If I am changing up from a small sprocket to a larger sprocket, I can click 1 to 3 times and it will move 1 or 3 sprockets corespondingly, and I can also repeat that action.

If I then change back down, it clicks once and the mech moves outwards slightly, which is the trim, then I have to change down one sprocket at a time.

If I was then to change back up the cassette, I then find that I have one small click if I move the lever gently but the mech does not move. It is possible though just to move the lever a bit more at the same time after the small click and once again I can click 1 to 3 times and change and hardly notice that small initial click.

If I do the "trimming" click, it is then possible to just do the smaller click in the opposite way, backwards and forwards etc not doing anything..

Possibly the smaller click going up the cassette is just taking up the cable tension after trimming?

Just noticed that my trimming works the opposite way to what Zoiders mentions?
