Hi,
I have been getting back into cycling this summer due to a running injury, and as my drivechain could do with replacing, I'm looking at upgrading to 10 speed at the same time.

My bike is a 2001 Cannondale R1000 (CAAD4, mostly Ultegra).

I'm pretty sure that a full 10 speed Ultegra groupset *should* fit just fine and this is the set I'm looking at:

2008 10 speed Ultegra SL Groupset
Chainset 172.5mm 39/53 rings
Hollowtech 11 bottom bracket - english
Front mech - Braze-on
Rear mech
STI gear levers
Brake calipers
12-25 cassette
Chain
All cables
All groupset components are the 6660 SL parts

My biggest worry would be with the bottom bracket.

Can anybody confirm this will be ok?

Can't see why the BB wont fit (replacing an older 105 right?)

However, ideally you'll need to get the frame faced before you fit it.

Why are you changing the brake calipers? Unless they are knackered there is no need. The only essentials are shifters, chain and cassette. The only reason to change anything else is if they are worn out or you just fancy something new and shiney (and why not?).

I'd also add, why make an expensive change on a 7 year old bike, it won't greatly improve performance over 9 spd, and will wear a bit faster, OK it will be new and a few grams lighter, but I'd be surprised if that will make much odds either.
On the other hand, if you REALLY want to do it... then fair enough. I'd spend the cash elsewhere.

Welcome to CC btw.

I need to replace chain, chainwheels, cassette.

Cables should probably be changed, and the STI's seem to be getting "sloppy", brake calipers are low quality "Coda".

So, tempted to just upgrade to a complete Ultegra SL groupo as it can be found for £350.

What does "facing" mean?

p.s. thanks for the welcome message.

Facing means having the bottom bracket shell squared up so that the outboard bearings are not running out of line. Not a problem with cartridge BBs as the bearings are self contained within the cartridge, but advisable with the seperate bearing cups on Hollowtech or Ultra Torque.

Nescessary because of penny pinching by Shimano and Campag in not having self aligning bearings.

Facing is a load of hocum ime. scraping a slither of paint off both sides of a BB will not make the slightest bit of difference.

It will all fit fine btw. and it is worth it. a 2008 groupset will be so much better than your 2001 vintage. it will be like riding a new bike
