I assume this is a memorial to dead German, a sailor I presume, otherwise why would he have been here. Can anyone translate?

Diese Gedenktafel widmen dem hier an 24 Septbr. 1868 gestorben Carl Piehl.
Seine Geschwister aus Berlin u, Neu Strelitz vom ewigen Andenken.

This plaque commemorates Carl Piel who died here on 24 Sept. 1868.
His brothers & sisters from Berlin & New Strelitz think of him forever.


Keeping spell check from doing strange things to the German version was more difficult than deciphering some of the German letters.

There is a Flickr page (1) offering an explanation, including the unusual malady of dying of sunstroke in Ireland & a picture of another monument.
