would it be feasible

I have a Dawes Nomad with Alfine 11 hub gears, would it be practical or even feasible to change the front ring to say a 32 tooth and the rear to a bigger ring, and what is likely to be the effect of such a change (as I got older the hills get progressively steeper)

No reason not to change the gearing to a lower ratio. I'd suggest you only need to change either the rear cog or front chainring, not both. Either way you'll need to check and adjust the chain length. The end result will be you'll gain lower ratios and loose higher ones.
Have a play with this to compare different gear options
