Hi,

I have had my bike for a year now and i noticed on sunday that the rear wheel now wobbles about 1mm each way. Does that mean the bearings have gone? The wheel is a shimano r500.

Remove the wheel and the QR. Now try gripping the stub ends of the axle and try to see if there is movement. If there is then the cones need adjustment and the net will show you how although you will need the correct size of cone spanners to do this.
If by "wobble" you are referring to the rim's movement as it passes the brake blocks and there is no slack in the cones, then your wheel has gone out of true and will require the spokes re-tensioned and trued before stressing and de-stressing.

Thanks gwhite, The wheel was stationary and i could wobble it with my hand. I will investigate the cones as you suggest.

Hi

Those wheels have a simple cup and cone hub so probably just need tightening up a fraction.

To get cup and cone hubs set up correctly takes a bit of practice but basically you tighten up the lock nut until there is just a small bit of play and then you will find that the tightening up of the QR removes that last bit of play.

It may be that the QR has not been closed tight enough to achieve this so I'd just tighten it up a bit more and see if that removes the play.

If not then it's either a trip to the LBS or a crash course in servicing hubs.
