Although we've been there often neither myself or the better half can recall the surface composition on the Wirral Way track.

We're thinking of taking the kids out on Sunday for a few miles (Hooton to Parkgate and Back) but obviously we need to take account for the track - its ifs tarmac, its good, but if its crushed limestone then it will probably be muddy.

[Sorry for posting in Beginners, wasn't sure where else to put it]

Garrila - try msg'ing Dodgey - www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/member.php?u=3458 he lives on the Wirral.

To Heswall it's a good grit surface, relaid and widened in the last few years but after that I don't know as I don't go on that section. I'm not sure how far the improvements went, so no help unfortunately.

Edit: Found this http://www.best-park-wirral.org/1.html seems to indicate that the path to Hooton is good too.

We probably went 5 times spring and summer but I never really thought to make a note of the surface so that in the middle of winter we can take the mini-garrillas out on a ride.

I think we'll probably risk it and if all fails we drive up to Thurstaston and walk on the common and the go for chips in Parkgate.

Thanks all.

Hi Garilla
Used wirral way a lot in summer but not so much in winter.
Most of the path is a good surface not tarmac but mostly grit. There will be a few small patches of mud but shouldn't be anything to worry about.

With the rain/sleet yesetrday and the freezing weather over night we decided not to risk it and just cycled to the lcal park instead, which was enough for our little'nes.

Only just noticed this thread. Much of the WW has been resurfaced, so for the most part, it is all weather rideable between West Kirby and Thurstaston. It's also pretty good between Thurstaston and Heswall, though there are a few puddles here and there. Once you get clear of Heswall and start up to Neston it gets a bit grotty, easily bad enough to have you off your bike and cleaning out the mud/grit from your mudguards if you have them fitted.
