Winter Jacket

Looking for a winter jacket that can be worn from around 2 degrees with perhaps a base layer and jersey underneath, that can then be worn up to about 12 degrees with just a summer jersey underneath.

That's quite a big temperature range and you'll be wanting something breathable. How much do you want to spend? Can you run to a Rapha softshell at... whatever they are now? £200??

I've been trying to see if anywhere has got deals on the Gore Oxygen SO windstopper jacket, best I've found is GB Cycles at £92 - but they only have it in black. It's a well reviewed jacket but unless I can find it at less then it's out of your price range.

What seems to give me a good temperature range are my soft shells the full waterproofs are just too warm. My warmest is a Giordana (I picked up 1/2 price in a lbs for about £50). I really like my Gore Phantom but its a bit dear. My most flexible are actually labled as a Jerseys (Endura FS260 Jet stream) or my winter club (Roubaix) jersey and a gilet if needed.

I came across the Endura Windchill Jacket/Jersey in a LBS the other day. Lovely jacket with windproof softshell style front and nice warm fleece lining with proper pockets on the back etc. There's also a good amount of reflective stuff on.

This Giordana from Parker International is worth considering. A good price but limited stocks - might be worth checking with them to see if they have your size in an acceptable colour

My gore windstopper jersey has never left me wanting. I use it comfortably without any base layer down to around 3-4 degrees, and imagine it wouldn't be much different at 2 degrees. Currently discounted at evans although the stock looks to be getting pretty low now...

Another to consider is the November jacket (or maybe January) from Mike Dyason. Thirty quid. Very warm.

I have an Endura Air Defence which is good below 8 but just about ok up to 12. Just been out with it on and just a long sleeved base layer and no probs. I also had bib longs, skull cap, Buff, merino socks, overshoes and gloves with silk liners! It was about zero!!

personally i'd say you're not gonna be comfy in a softshell at 12 deg, not unless it's got serious vents.

very nice, fine today ('bout 1 deg c?) with helly hansen base layer and dhb (thin-ish) L.S. jersey. prob'ly JUST ok at 12 deg if you're nesh and/or ride either very slowly or only down steep hills
only thing is the front 'puffs out' a bit , but fine with the camelback (so i've relegated it to mtb/fixie duties).
