Hi guys

not sure this is in right place but just wanted a bit of advice, only started riding through the spring/summer and wearing a cheapish (£15/20) thin cycling jersey which has been fine, however went for a ride the other day and even though I was hot/sweaty as normal, i was at the same time freezing cold and wet after a bit so guess I need something a bit warmer.

any advice of things to look at and/or avoid ? seen a couple on ebay pretty cheap (£20/25) can't afford much more than that, there is jackets and jerseys some have ''light fleece'' inner waterproof etc
just don't want to buy anything that ends up being useless like half the stuff I bought off my own back when starting out

cheers

Thermal base layer, under a jersey...? Sports Direct do cheap Campri thermal layers that work excellently, imho.

The Aldi winter tops have been good for me. Your local store might have them in stock as they were on specials recently.

There's another cycling special buy coming up but don't know what yet.

As Beeble says, definitely worth keeping an eye on Aldi. I got a great jacket when they had their last cycling special a few weeks ago. I would probably just layer up breathable layers (if its not too cold, I go for a short-slv cycling top over long slv base layer) but you will need something waterproof or at least water-resistant going into the winter. Also worth looking at Sports Direct online. I got a perfectly serviceable waterproof jacket there at the beginning of the summer for £15.

i prefer thermal to waterproof. Waterproofs just leave you sweaty. Have a look on www.wiggle.co.uk, they have their own brand (DHB) which is good quality and reasonable price, look at the sale items. You need a base layer that is sweat wicking and quick drying and one or two layers over that.

As posted elsewhere:

Armwarmers are good and very flexible.
LAYERS! Layers are good, multiple thin breathable layers. Add and subtract as necessary.
Decathlon 'Mesh Vest' about £10, modern take on the string vest, brill summer or winter, helps keep you less sweaty. Brill.
Ski Gloves - Campri or similar, cheap as chips from Chavsports/direct.
Leggings - Ron Hill Tracksters, again from Chavsports
A cheap pertex Gillet (like from Decathlon) is a brilliant year-round article and very flexible particularly on variable days.
Outer shell - you can often use non-cycling kit if you can accept a little compromise.
Sandwich bags can keep feet warm and dry!

Decathlon has good basic gear that works well.
These guys are idiosyncratic and good too .... with a clothing sale on - some bargain lightweight outer shells! http://www.inmotionproducts.com/
