As my night vision jacket is about to be retired from service I was wondering the following.

Is it better to have a windproof or waterproof jacket for autumn/winter?

Alternatively just have one of each or do jackets exist which are both and breathable?

I have noticed rainy days are not that common but getting wet on a cold day is no fun especially on the way to work.

I have both, but it has to be properly chucking it down for me to wear the waterproof

Gortex stuff exists if you are wanting to pay through the nose for something that is waterproof breathable and warm. My most breathable jacket leans towards the wind proof/ weather resistant side (the Motane Featherlite Velo) although I doubt this would be warm enough for regular stuff in the winter. I do wear it occasionally in winter on longer rides because of it breath ability but will be wearing a gilet too. There might be products out there but I've found it best to have a couple of jackets depending what I want. Breath ability or warmth suit best. If I know I'm going for a long ride however I'd go for the breathability type and generate my own heat (hot air ;) ) and take extra layers.

Gortex........yea a little expensive but id use nothing less,
i have this for autum/ winter riding/ hikeing....believe me these are the dogs, and pack up into a fist size stash bag........... note 'Paratex' also breathable
