Does it make a difference?

If you rode 5 miles one way and five miles back would it be equal or would one be better if ?

a) the wind was behind you on the way out and in front on the way back
b) in front on way out then behind on way back
c) no wind

The wind will be in front out and back. It's one of the rules of cycling.

There are two basic laws of cycling:

1. Any wind will be an equal and opposite force (think cycling east at 17mph. Wind will be easterly at 17mph). This is Newton's 3rd law of cycling

2. For every downhill, there is an uphill. (Unattributed, but believed by many to be Newtons's law of gravitydespair)

C would be the best.

Strong tailwinds (coming from behind) do assist, but you then have to deal with headwinds.

Headwinds not only slow you down, but become a mental battle too (for me anyway).

just relax lay back and spin you will get there eventually, just think of a head wind as the perfect thing for keeping you cool and keeping the flys from bothering you or get a velomobile and never notice the wind

I had something this morning that I've noticed before and it's bloomin' annoying. I left for work and there was no discernable wind. Got going and could feel a breeze in my face. It seemed to get stronger and was definately slowing me down, and yet none of the branches on the trees I passed were moving at all. Even the leaves were still as far as I could tell. It felt like being in a 'bubble' of headwind!

Yeah! That is exactly the same thing that happened to me, there seemed to be a very strong headwind that was only where I was, and was slowing me down, and leaves next to me seemed to be barely moving, really frustrating.

Me too. I have even been known to get all Gandalf in strong winds and try to cast spells to disperse them. Doesn't work though.
