Are you sure your fc-r600 is 50/39 and not 50/34?

I am only mentioning that because your low range will change. Either way replacing it by the FC6600 53/39 should be fine but you will likely have to move the front mech up the seat tube by about 6mm to achieve the 2mm front mech/large ring clearance, and you might need a slightly longer chain.

The best way, imho, to figure out the ideal chain length required is with a calculator such as this. You might be lucky and don't need a new chain.

As you can see the small ring has no effect on chain length (but can affect whether the front and rear mechs are still ok, no problem in your case), it is the 3 extra teeth of the big ring that might call for a longer chain if the original is on the short side. You can also kind of check to see whether the chain still wraps around the pulleys nicely on the rear mech when you shorten the chain by pulling a couple of links together with your hand when the chain is on large front and back.

thats great many thanks for the info on this (put into plain english lol)i think the chain is a little on the long side as i have heard it slap against the chain stay when ive been going down hill on a pretty bad road which i was a little worried about as this is a completey stock setup.

im new to this forum and very impressed with the support thanks again Phil
