I've given up with the headset on my bike, which seems to come loose all the time despite replacement of the bearings and tightening it up as much as I can whilst retaining steering. As it's over 20 years old I thought I'd splash out on a new one.

This one in particular has caught my attention as it has sealed, cartridge bearings that are angular contact, a 3 year warranty and is sealed "for the British weather" What really has me sold though is the line "Expanding collar design means once you tighten the headset, it stays tightened"

However I'm not sure if it will fit. The description says:

- Upper stack height - 27mm
- Overall stack height - 39mm

My bike has (just about) 27mm of thread on the forks, but I suspect I need 39mm i.e. it won't fit. Is that correct?

Suggestions for other 1" threaded headsets that won't come loose much appreciated if that is the case.

Thanks again - I seem to be asking a lot of questions of late!

Based on your link I assume your existing headset is a 1" threaded headset. If you aren't sure read this.

Regarding threaded headset replacement, the stack height that matters is the overall one, because I assume you will be replacing the whole headset. The overall stack height is A+B in pic below, which you need to measure.

If the stack height of the existing headset is greater than that of the new, you might have to trim your forks' steerer tube (unless the difference is less than the distance between the top of the existing top headset nut and the top of the steerer), and if the thread doesn't go down enough on the steerer you might run out of thread (for the stop bearing race within A).

If the stack height of the existing headset is less than that of the new, you need to check you don't run out of steerer length/thread for the top part of A to screw onto the steerer.

Thanks - I ordered a Tange Falcon headset in the end as the measurements seem very similar (if anything smaller) than the one fitted - I don't know what the fitted on is though, which makes it a little bit of an unknown until I try and fit the new one.

I sense that you're sceptical

I went with Tange-Seiki partly because Muddy Fox used Tange tubing back in their day. Although I'm putting it in my non-tange one.
