Dear all

I have just transferred my roadside repair kit to a bidon. I will need it for my road bike and my hybrid. Obviously they demand different tubes: 700x 23 vs 26" x 35. I dont go far on the hybrid and I wondered if I might get away with the narrow tube for a shortish distance by over-inflating the narrower tube? Anyone tried this before?

Cheers

Probably.....
Stick some self adhesive patches in the bidon as well just to be on the safe side.

I wouldn't, more as the diameters are different as much as anything, can't see a 700c fitting well in a 26" tyre. You could always give it a try first in the comfort of the shed, instead of at the roadside when you actually need it.
I keep different kits for different bikes.

Each of our bikes has its own small saddle bag containing a spare tube, a CO2 cylinder, some quick patches, a chain link for that bike and a small multi tool. We have three different sizes of inner tube so each is tightly bundled with red, yellow or black vinyl tape and the bike has the same colour caps on the valves.

Like the colour coordinated idea. I keep mtb kit in a camelback backpack, road bike is a tube/CO2 inflator in a topeak pack. Don't bother with longtail bike, it has M+ tyres and rarely far away from a bike shop anyway.

If you look at inner tubes they are not sized with any precision

For instance the Schwalbe SV15 will fit a tyre width form between 28 to 42 mm

700x32 has a 686 mm diameter and 32 mm in width
26X35 has a 623 mm diameter and 35 mm in width

There is sufficient resilience in the tubes to "overstretch".... although I was told many years ago that overstretch in width and diameter was to be avoided

However you are better using a smaller tube as it will stretch tight where a longer tube will leave kinks and overlaps which unless carefully dealt with can cause issues with inflating and a bumpy ride

I have done this when desperate and never had any issues...... one bike ran like this for almost a year

However as above, if you can carry individual tunes tubes then it makes sense to do so. The space under the seat is ideal for this

For example, Schwalbe now sell tubes marked for 27.5" and 29er.
