I have a Specialized Tricross (just the basic model). Before that I had a Specialized Crossroads (hybrid, for about 5 years). I am finding that with my new bike, although loving the drop handlebars, position etc, I am finding the granny gears not easy enough and the high gears not high enough. I still have my old bike with a Shimano CS-HG30-81 cassette. Is it worth changing, will it fit even or is it the most ridiculous thing you have heard

Compatability is the key! (will it fit) is your freewheel cassete on your new bike a Shimano! Do you have the required clearance for a change of cassette? I think, that you will eventually get used to riding the new bike; and adapt to the gearing!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Assuming that the cassette would fit you would have issues with chain and cassette wear not mtaching up, it would be easier to just get a wider range cassette for the tri cross.

The tri cross is a triple i assume? if i read it right and it comes with a 2300 rear mech with a 26 tooth rear sprocket and a 30 granny ring you have a bottom gear of around 30 inches. If you want to stick a lower gear on the back you might get away with a 27 tooth but if i remember rightly then the rear mech might struggle with anything bigger. For top speed according to the specs you have a 13 tooth so you could go to a 12 .A 12-27 block would give you a gear range of 28 to 117 inches.

The old "what speed do you spin your legs at " comes in as usual as your top gear of 52 x 13 ( i think ? ) still gives you 29 mph at 90 rpm

Sorry for not getting back, and thanks for the replies.

I think for the moment I will just try cycling in a different style, I have been riding in a lower gear but spinning quicker and have found some improvements. I think I will try a bit longer as I do not really want to change anything if I do not have too. The thought of rear mech struggling etc, puts me right off. I'll just have to get fitter
