..........Hadn't realised he was in 99th place.

He lost about 12 minutes yesterday because of a crash.

There's some right old Wiggo-bashing in the comments by someone who sounds like he's in love with Mr Froome... I often wonder if any CCers post on the Graun bike blogs and under what names.

The way froome competed after his crash, maybe he should have pulled out too. He was nothing more than shocking on the final two days of the dauphine

Both crashes highlight the fragility of an "all-your-eggs-in-one-(Froome-shaped)-basket" policy for the TdF. Say Sky lose Froome to a crash in the first week...........what happens then?

Pity we didn't have a TdS thread until something newsworthy (bearded bloke in 99th position drops out) happens.

I know ... I could have started one.

There were a few comments in one of the many Wiggo/Froome threads following the first stage. Always amazes me how much waffle there is about Wiggo, but when he actually does some bicycling, there's barely a murmur!

You hardly ever get a plan B option, as riders sacrifice themselves for the leader or are not thinking of GC because it's not their role, so are well down the GC when the leader goes out. I can think of only one time off the top of my head when it happened and that was the first year Ulrich won it when he was there to support Riise. Slightly differently Roche won the Giro when he was meant to be riding as support but in general there's no plan B and there's good reason there isn't.

As I said, I was saving it - I have the stages on the recorder-box thing at home and haven't watched any yet - not had a day off since a week last Sunday. And then the Guardian went and ruined it all by having the above story on their home page

Hinault came second in 1986 because he couldn't beat Greg LeMond, whom he was supposed to be supporting. The first TdF I remmeber watching - it was riveting stuff, and as there was no internet and we didn't have Ceefax you really did have to wait to watch the highlights on C4 to see what had happened.
