Hi,

I'm a newbie to the forum and hope someone can help me find a suitable rack for a Whyte Stirling...

I just bought a Tortec Tour Ultralight but it doesn't seem to be a good fit, the issue being the custom rear dropout (which allows the rear hydraulic disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle) .

The rack looks like it could do with being an extra 1" wider to fit on the outside of the rear triangle. I don't particularly want to force it as holes would not line up nice and straight and there would be significant rubbing on the frame.

Anyone with a Whyte R7 series with a good fitting rack...?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I've just picked up a Stirling today.

Found exactly the same, the tortec Expedition rack I took off my Tricross Comp really needs to be about an inch wider. Looks like I'll be either not using the Whyte to head to work or dusting off the rucksack until I buy another rack to try and bend a little :-(

Hi,

I popped back to Edinburgh Bicycles where I bought the bike (but not the rack) and they said that bending was the name of the game. I spoke to a (helpful) chappie who also owned a Sterling and he recommened the Tortec Velocity which a duly bought. I needed to widen it a bit (just by gently pulling the sides apart) and it now fits like a glove. Would recommend it (especially in black).

Cheers,

Fantastic stuff Noswar, will get one of them ordered tomorrow.

Gonna ride the new steed into work in morning with rucksack just cause I can't wait. You made any other changes to yours?

I've had a Stirling for about 14 months now and love it. I changed the tyres almost immediately as they just weren't up to the horrors of the roads in Glasgow. I now have Conti Grand Prix 4 Seasons which have been great. The pedals got replaced with Time Roc ATAC S as I was too much of a liability with the supplied toeclips...!

Two bits of advice though: the replacement brake pads are a bugger to find. You need to order Tektro Auriga Sub/Twin pads if you have the Volans brakes. The other Auriga ones won't fit. Secondly, I had the misfortune of a 30mph blow out on my front tire and shredded the rim, meaning new wheel. I couldn't find ANY wheelsets that had narrow 14mm rims and a disc hub so ended up having to get one built. Velocity Rims do an Aero rim that's almost identical to the supplied Whyte one.

Thanks for advice, I've got the 2012 model with Avid Elixir 1 brakes so hopefully I wont have any issues there as they seem quite common. You got my thinking about the wheels though, as a 'big operator' (about 18st), I will more than likely need to replace the wheels early so will check out the Aero rims.

Noswar; I found a Tortec Velocity rack on ebay which was pretty much brand new for 14quid. Fitted it and it does indeed fit liike a glove but the first time I came to use it I found my heel was catching on my bags (Ortleib Roller's). Guess my feet are two big haha.

I decided to go with Shimano A530 SPD pedals instead of SPD only which are absolutely fantastic and have replaced the standard grips with some Ergon GP2's to give a little more support and options with the mini bar ends. Other than that the bike is great, tyres will be changed next as I've read in a few places that the stock tyres are about as puncture resistant as cling film.....
