Why your (steel) fork steerer shouldn't break

Just for interest, I have here a new Columbus SLX steerer tube which is going into an Eddy Merckx fork as a steerer swap (you try finding a fork for a 23" frame).

The first pic is the view you usually see, the threaded top (threadless is a similar thickness).

The second pic is the butted bottom end, usually buried in the fork crown. The butt is about 3 inches long and then tapers out.

The third pic is just to show the SLX rifling. Where's James Bond?
