Just to get serious for a minute, I would always recommend not cycling on the back roads. You are far more likely to have people come out of side roads and hit you, people trying to squeeze past you and forcing you into car mirrors and kerbs etc, crap road surfaces, so on and so on
Ride on the main roads - they tend to be wider, giving you more space. They tend not to have sharp corners and bends, better for visibility. They often have bus lanes, basically a big cycle lane. Fewer stop and start moments - fewer cars trying to blast past or squeeze past. People are more cautious when turning into a main road froma side road, safer for you again.
