So you turn on the radio like real quiet - you can hardly hear it.

Yet over time - it seems more than loud enough !

I listen to the radio via my TV.
Ist thing in the morning I put sports news on and have to put the sound up to No 65. I then swith to R2 and it's deafening. I have to turn it down to No 31.
Similar problem with films etc.
Why can't they get their act together.

I don't know if it's connected, but I read that music and ads, unsurprisingly, have more impact when louder, and that this has influenced producers to record their products at the about maximum volume possible, sacrificing highs and lows.

Maybe manufacturers of radios build their radios to gradually increase volume.

A company car I had a few years ago automatically increased radio volumes as you sped up.

Another colleague had same car type and model but his system didn't so he had to do it manually

My son watches a lot of YouTube via the TV.
The adverts are deafening.

What I find these days is any film or series on tv the dialogue is quiet so have to turn up sound to hear then if any action occurs, it's deafening.

The progress that is flat screen TV. Only room for little speakers.

When I first read your post it seemed pretty normal - but now it seems like you're shouting. Please desist!

Extreme levels of audio compression are becoming common, but because not everyone does it you end up with huge jumps up and down in perceived volume, even from the same service.

On the other had the cheap speakers built into modern TVs and PC monitors give vastly better quality sound than the big speakers in old TVs. Even as a bit of a hi-fi nerd, I concede that a lot of cheap audio gear generally is pretty good these days however much I love my £500 monster Kef speakers(£3k new apparently)

Radio volume changes from station to station is my bugbear.
I listen mostly to R4 or R4 Extra. Sometimes I tune into the local BBC Bristol. The volume on that is insane! I have to almost halve the volume as it is deafening. Rant over.
