I have noticed over the past few weeks just how much is diesel there is on the road surface..
I must of followed a diesel trail for about 2 miles today, was expecting to find a broken down vehicle..
As its so expensive, who can afford to waste it?

If you live in a rural area it's probably tractors, they loose a fair bit of diesel and oil, they mainly discharge oil on hills because they will be changing through gears. Farmers don't pay tax on diesel so they don't care as much if they spill it. Probably think in their own minds that they are looking after the countryside in some strange way.

they do but not as much as a "normal" road going vehicle. I don't know any farmers who love to throw money away. most i know are so tight they squeak when they walk. don't let the current location fool you, I grew up in Rural N Wales ( wot you might call a wooly back  ).

I often cycle past a new housing development and I have come to the conclusion it is the road sweeper lorry .... which means the whole area is covered as obviously he just keeps going around and around.

Actually I would call you a "gog"! I would then run away...

Usually coaches and lorries in my experience, having followed a few spilling diesel all over the place. Overfilled tanks I believe.

Flippin lethal on two wheels in the wet, more so on powered two wheels where I spend the other half of my commuting time. Don't half get used to reading the road and looking for those tell tail shiny patches...

Usually overfilled lorries and coaches in my experience. You always tend to find it on sharp corners or at roundabouts.

Tractors shouldn't lose oil. Some, especially older ones can be a devil to try and keep oil tight but most leaks are so small as to be not worth worrying about. Leaking hydraulic pipes are another matter as oil is under pressure but you would fix that asap.

And unlike farmers local councils do have a reputation for wasting money pointlessly.

Overfilled tanks will do it but a lost fuel cap on a lorry is the usual cause of those big ones on roundabouts. Our two local roundabouts got a huge slick the other day and only where a vehicle with a tank on the right would be turning left, so on the entrance and exit of each one. I hit the first one, it was drizzling and my glasses were not as clear as usual, and the front wheel immediately washed out. Fortunately the Kettwiesel has three wheels so the front slid through the slick and started to grip, albeit poorly, again so all was well.

Don't think its a council one ... I think its under the developers control - however I would like to know how it could pass an emissions test as it pumps out tons of smoke. Still they seem nice and tend to stop and let cyclists out of side roads in front of them etc.
