Who's in charge, me or the bike ?

If I go out on the road bike, I go faster than my ability allows. Go too fast, burn out in no time.
If I go out on the hybrid, I just seem to relax a bit and seem to find it easier to remember that this is actually meant to be fun. Go a bit slower, enjoy the scenery. Maybe staying off the road is what helps me to chill out and go at a more chilled pace. Stuff this mph thing, smiles per house is where it's at.

Is it just me, or is this common ?

I know any sort of cycling is good, but I wish I could just calm down a bit and take my time on the road bike and accept that my abilities are limited and just relax and enjoy it.

I hate to say it, but right now, I prefer the old Diamondback hybrid over the brand new Trek road bike, just because of this.

P.S. Early cycle on the road bike tomorrow whilst the other humans are still sleeping, see if we can reach an understanding.

It's not just you

I've had my first road bike for less than two weeks, but I've also noticed a tendency to go faster unintentionally.

It is totally down to the bike - it wants to go faster, it can go faster... and if I didn't keep an eye on my HRM then I'd probably wear my self out faster too.

I generally use an HRM to keep my pace/effort in check - when on my hybrid too.

Another thing I do at times which helps me keep control of speed/effort, is to concentrate on smooth, circular pedalling at a steady cadence.

So don't sweat it, you're not alone - just get out there and enjoy it!

I think it's an Age/Personality thing rather than a Bike thing

I have recently returned to biking at an advanced age, and I thoroughly enjoy a ride of 5-10 miles with a pub stop half-way around

Enjoy!

I would be willing to take the Trek off your hands if it helps

You probably wouldn't.

It's a 1.1, which is fine with me, but nothing to write home about in absolute terms I should imagine.

Regarding the comment above about getting rid of one.
Are you mental ?!!!??

Get rid of a bicycle ?

Why on earth would I want to do such a thing?

Just worked out a route for tomorrow.
Up early with a bit of luck and see how I get on.
It's a longer loop than I'm used to, so that should slow me down a bit...
