My faith in white van man has just been restored after the phone call I’ve just received.
I was out today cycling in that fine drizzly rain and fighting the strong gusts of wind all the way back home. I’m turning around a 90 degree turn from the main road which is only about twenty five yards away from home.
I’m making the turn and a LWB white van is on my outside also making the same turn, I’ve unclipped my left foot from the pedal as I know I’m going to be squeezed between a parked car (few yards from the corner) and the white van making the turn.
I’ve stopped and he’s made the turn rather tight. so I’ve pulled my bike closer to me for fear of him clipping me, lost my balance and I’ve fallen over backwards between the side of the van and in front of the parked car banging my elbow on the curb (you know how banging your funny bone isn’t funny) and I’ve laid there a few minutes as the pain shot up to my shoulder.
Mr White van man continued on like nothing happened, so I’ve copied the telephone number from the side of his van as he made a left turn (looking from under the front of the parked car) and rang this number once I hobbled the few yards home.
A woman answered (I take it this was his wife) and I complained about what had just happened and his bad driving.
I’ve just received a phone call from the driver himself apologising for what happened to me, he’s driving his brand new van today (as I said is a LWB one) he said he’s only been used to a much smaller van and misjudged the corner, he was aware I was there, but hadn’t seen me topple over as he was checking his other mirror at the time and the find drizzle rain on his side windows obscured his view.
He’d continued on assuming that I had dropped in behind his van and that was the reason he couldn’t see me, he also said he’s kept checking his mirrors to see if I was still there, taken it that I’d turned off in the other direction as he’s made the left turn a little way up the road. Again he apologised profusely saying had he’d of known I’d fallen over he would have stopped.
He’s also admitted he was wrong to overtake me on the bend, but hadn’t taken into account the longer vehicle he was driving and that he was new to the area and had came upon the turn he had to make rather quicker than he thought.
He said he would gladly pay for any damage to me and the bike / clothing (which there are none) just that aching funny bone dullness.
I’d originally thought it was another typical white van mans driving ability, but then again maybe I was wrong too to judge him like that too quickly.
