Dear cyclists,

I want to buy an extra set of wheels for my new bike so that I can swap from knoblies to road tyres easily. The problem is I don't know what is the minimum to need to pay to get a workable pair.

I've seen wheels from as little as £40, which I assume are junk, and seventy or so gets you Deore hubs. What's the minimum standard for both hubs and rims, bearing in mind that these will be road only wheels?

Thank you in advance for any advice :0)

The best your budget will allow.
Deore hubs are nothing special but they work well and they're reliable.

I would go for the classic combination of Deore hubs on a Mavic rim.

Ive relatively got the cheapest wheels you can buy:

And they are a hell of a lot better than some raleigh jobs I had which were total sh**e on warranty.

So, cheap, IS NOT rubbish.

Saying that, i'm picking up a pair of wheels, which should be my best, tomorrow :becool:

And those cheap wheels will be my training variants - so they'll get a hammering in the winter. Though I have also a pair of OpenSports:

Which i'm gonna throw on a pair of Tiagra hubs as they are cheap and i've rode through all weathers on them and they've been good.

Hub weight diference is not much unless you go Carbon OR Titanium.

is it MTB wheels you want Mr Pig?

Yes, disk ones, although I'm not bothered about style. If they have v rims that's fine.

I know that cheap wheels can be ok. The wheels that came on my Hardrock have taken everything I've thrown at them, Long road miles, bumpy hillsides and they're still straight after nearly a decade. They've been fairly neglected too and apart from the cones on the front spindle starting to go they're still good.

Another pair of similar quality will do, I won't even be using them all the time, it's just that I'm not sure of what to buy to get that basic level of reliability. I've seen very cheap wheels, but one assumes they're the kind of wheels fitted to Halfords hundred-pound hacks.

Off to look for Crosstrails..

Mavic rimes are great.

Just got some Deore hubs and Sun 18 rims for my commuter - £50 delivered from SJS cycles via ebay... - £70 plus post on the web site - so far well impressed as they get commuting use only - not off road - if I was off roading then Mavic rims !
